Dienos prekyba: minusas visur
O kai sulyginau stopo plotį, skirtumas beveik dingo.
Lygių įėjimas prieš atsitiktinį įėjimą
vidutinis R sandoriui, long, kopėčios 2R→1R, 3R→2R, 5R→3R
Lygių sandorių stopas natūraliai platesnis (LP — už pramušimo kraštinės, PRB — nuo atidarymo kainos). Platesnis stopas pats savaime mažina atsitiktinius išmušimus, todėl lyginti galima tik tokio pat stopo sandorius. Tada lieka +0,006R.
Portfelis: loterija su dešimt bilietų
Reali sąskaita — 10 000 $, 10 pozicijų, rizika iki 1 % — atskleidė dar vieną dalyką. Rezultatą lemia, ar į vietas pateko kelios akcijos, kurios paskui bėgo metus. Pakartojus tą pačią simuliaciją 20 kartų su kita signalų eile, galutinis kapitalas svyravo nuo 12 iki 45 tūkst. $.

Ką iš to darau
Pagrindas — indeksas ir ETF. Didžioji kapitalo dalis lieka indekse ar ETF strategijoje; aktyviai prekybai — tik tiek, kiek galiu sau leisti atsilikti.
Viską matuoju prieš SPY. Apžvalgoje ir portfelio analizatoriuje — SPY linija ir skirtumas.
Lygį naudoju rizikai, ne pirkimo priežasčiai. Jis pasako, kur stopas ir kiek pirkti. Stopas ne siauresnis kaip ~0,8–1 ATR.
Rizikos nekeliu pagal balą. Balas skaneryje lieka informacinis.
Kiekvieną naują idėją tikrinu tuo pačiu protokolu ir pildau išankstinį žurnalą realioje prekyboje.
Ribos

A level is a risk tool, not an edge
In a single day I tested Gerchik levels in day trading, in swing trading and in a realistic portfolio simulation — hundreds of thousands of trades, with a random-entry control and historical S&P 500 membership. Not one mechanical rule beat simply holding SPY. And the only edge I found turned out to be almost entirely a distortion created by the index list.

The headline result
I compared every strategy against two benchmarks: a random entry in the same stocks with the same stop and management, and holding SPY. An absolute profit without these comparisons says nothing — from 2017 to 2026 almost everything went up.
Annual return versus SPY
$10,000 account, 10 positions, no leverage; portfolios — median of 20 runs
The only bar that clearly beats SPY is momentum on today's S&P 500 list. Using the stocks that were actually in the index on each day, it drops to 11.1%.
Six theses
01Entry at a level ≈ random entryWith the same stop the difference is +0.006R per trade; levels were better in only 5 years out of 10.
02The exit creates no edgeFixed targets from 0.5R to 2R or an early ladder did not improve the result — they only redistributed it.
03Preconditions and score separate nothing1,738 slices: of 57 positive in the training period, 6 survived the test period.
04A few winners carry the profit10 trades out of 1,174 produced 94% of portfolio profit. With 10 slots it is a lottery.
05The index list liesToday's S&P 500 membership improved the momentum test by ~13 percentage points a year.
06The regime filter protects but does not earnSPY > SMA200 cuts drawdown by ~5 pp but costs ~3 pp of return a year.
Day trading: negative everywhere
S&P 100, 2019–2026, 1-minute bars. Entries only 09:55–11:45 and 13:30–15:00, exit at 15:45. Before costs the trades return about zero; after costs, a steady loss — the same before and after 2024.
Average result per trade after costs
4,405 to 88,790 trades per variant
A wider stop (0.25 instead of 0.10 ATR) reduced the loss, but not to zero. The strictest filters looked almost flat in the training period and delivered −0.065R in the test period.
Swing: level versus coin toss
S&P 500, 2017–2026, daily bars. The first impression was good: level trades +0.25R. But random entry with the same management earned +0.18R. And once I matched the stop width, the difference almost vanished.
Level entry versus random entry
average R per trade, long, ladder 2R→1R, 3R→2R, 5R→3R
The stop on level trades is naturally wider (LP — beyond the breakout edge, PRB — from the opening price). A wider stop by itself reduces random stop-outs, so only trades with the same stop can be compared. What remains is +0.006R.
Portfolio: a lottery with ten tickets
A realistic account — $10,000, 10 positions, risk up to 1% — revealed one more thing. The result depends on whether a few stocks that went on to run for years happened to land in the slots. Repeating the same simulation 20 times with a different signal order, final capital ranged from $12k to $45k.
Annual return: median and 10–90% range
20 runs per variant; momentum with historical membership — 62 settings
Levels and random entry overlap almost completely. The median of both is well below SPY.
Momentum and the distortion that changed everything
Classic momentum — the 10 strongest stocks every month, no stops — looked like a breakthrough: 26.9% a year, Sharpe 0.96, and 97% of 62 settings beat SPY. But in that test I picked stocks from today's S&P 500 list. It contains only the ones that survived and grew — SNDK, HOOD, PLTR and APP joined the index precisely because they went up.
How many momentum variants beat SPY
the same test, only the stock list differs
I repeated the test with historical S&P 500 membership: on each day only the stocks that were in the index that day are ranked. The result — a return exactly at SPY level, but with 50% more volatility.
The path of $10,000: momentum with historical membership versus SPY
top 10 by 12–1 and 6–1 month return and proximity to the 52-week high, rebalanced every 21 days
Difference from SPY in each year
percentage points; behind in 6 years out of 10
For nine years the strategy lagged the index, and the whole gap was closed by 2026 alone — the memory and data-storage wave (MU, WDC, STX, SNDK). In practice few people would sit through that, and nobody guarantees the wave will come.
How this fits with the TAL study
In the earlier study “The edge is in the entry, not the exit” a trend pullback system (RSI(2) ≤ 20, price ≥ 10% above SMA200) showed +0.11R over random entry. This study did not test that system — it tested pure levels without the trend and RSI filter. Two conclusions agree: the exit creates no edge, and a higher score does not mean a better result.
But today I learned a new lesson: TAL also used today's index lists. Until I retest it with historical membership and at portfolio level against SPY, I treat its +0.11R as unproven.
What I take from it
The core — index and ETFs. Most of the capital stays in the index or an ETF strategy; active trading gets only as much as I can afford to see lag.
I measure everything against SPY. In the dashboard and the portfolio analyser — an SPY line and the difference.
I use the level for risk, not as a reason to buy. It tells me where the stop goes and how much to buy. Stop no tighter than ~0.8–1 ATR.
I don't raise risk by score. The score in the scanner stays informational.
I use gears to reduce drawdowns. In a bad regime — lower exposure, not a hunt for extra return.
Every new idea goes through the same protocol, and in live trading I keep a journal written before the outcome.
Limits
One long bull cycle (2017–2026); 2000–2002 and 2008 not tested.
Manual selection, news and intraday confirmation were not part of the tests — that may be the trader's real contribution, which only a journal kept in advance can verify.
Smaller companies, gappers, forex and crypto not tested.
Dividends and taxes not included for either the strategies or SPY.
Many variants were tested — so I relied on the training/test gap, the random control and the robustness grid, not on the single best number.
What comes next
I will retest TAL with historical index membership and at portfolio level against SPY, and in live trading I will record every signal before I know the outcome. In a few months I will publish what that data shows — data no selection can flatter.

Forschung

durchschnittliches R pro Trade, long, Leiter 2R→1R, 3R→2R, 5R→3R
In der früheren Studie „The edge is in the entry, not the exit“ (englische Fassung) zeigte ein Trend-Pullback-System (RSI(2) ≤ 20, Kurs ≥ 10 % über SMA200) gegenüber Zufallseinstieg +0,11R.
Was ich daraus mache
