Ką iš to darau

  1. Pagrindas — indeksas ir ETF. Didžioji kapitalo dalis lieka indekse ar ETF strategijoje; aktyviai prekybai — tik tiek, kiek galiu sau leisti atsilikti.
  2. Viską matuoju prieš SPY. Apžvalgoje ir portfelio analizatoriuje — SPY linija ir skirtumas.
  3. Lygį naudoju rizikai, ne pirkimo priežasčiai. Jis pasako, kur stopas ir kiek pirkti. Stopas ne siauresnis kaip ~0,8–1 ATR.
  4. Rizikos nekeliu pagal balą. Balas skaneryje lieka informacinis.
  5. Pavaras naudoju kritimams mažinti. Blogame režime — mažesnė ekspozicija, ne papildomos grąžos medžioklė.
  6. Kiekvieną naują idėją tikrinu tuo pačiu protokolu ir pildau išankstinį žurnalą realioje prekyboje.

Ribos

Research

A level is a risk tool, not an edge

In a single day I tested Gerchik levels in day trading, in swing trading and in a realistic portfolio simulation — hundreds of thousands of trades, with a random-entry control and historical S&P 500 membership. Not one mechanical rule beat simply holding SPY. And the only edge I found turned out to be almost entirely a distortion created by the index list.

The headline result

I compared every strategy against two benchmarks: a random entry in the same stocks with the same stop and management, and holding SPY. An absolute profit without these comparisons says nothing — from 2017 to 2026 almost everything went up.

The only bar that clearly beats SPY is momentum on today's S&P 500 list. Using the stocks that were actually in the index on each day, it drops to 11.1%.

Portfolio: a lottery with ten tickets

A realistic account — $10,000, 10 positions, risk up to 1% — revealed one more thing. The result depends on whether a few stocks that went on to run for years happened to land in the slots. Repeating the same simulation 20 times with a different signal order, final capital ranged from $12k to $45k.

Momentum and the distortion that changed everything

Classic momentum — the 10 strongest stocks every month, no stops — looked like a breakthrough: 26.9% a year, Sharpe 0.96, and 97% of 62 settings beat SPY. But in that test I picked stocks from today's S&P 500 list. It contains only the ones that survived and grew — SNDK, HOOD, PLTR and APP joined the index precisely because they went up.

For nine years the strategy lagged the index, and the whole gap was closed by 2026 alone — the memory and data-storage wave (MU, WDC, STX, SNDK). In practice few people would sit through that, and nobody guarantees the wave will come.

How this fits with the TAL study

In the earlier study “The edge is in the entry, not the exit” a trend pullback system (RSI(2) ≤ 20, price ≥ 10% above SMA200) showed +0.11R over random entry. This study did not test that system — it tested pure levels without the trend and RSI filter. Two conclusions agree: the exit creates no edge, and a higher score does not mean a better result.

But today I learned a new lesson: TAL also used today's index lists. Until I retest it with historical membership and at portfolio level against SPY, I treat its +0.11R as unproven.

What I take from it

  1. The core — index and ETFs. Most of the capital stays in the index or an ETF strategy; active trading gets only as much as I can afford to see lag.
  2. I measure everything against SPY. In the dashboard and the portfolio analyser — an SPY line and the difference.
  3. I use the level for risk, not as a reason to buy. It tells me where the stop goes and how much to buy. Stop no tighter than ~0.8–1 ATR.
  4. I don't raise risk by score. The score in the scanner stays informational.
  5. I use gears to reduce drawdowns. In a bad regime — lower exposure, not a hunt for extra return.
  6. Every new idea goes through the same protocol, and in live trading I keep a journal written before the outcome.

Limits

What comes next

I will retest TAL with historical index membership and at portfolio level against SPY, and in live trading I will record every signal before I know the outcome. In a few months I will publish what that data shows — data no selection can flatter.

In der früheren Studie „The edge is in the entry, not the exit“ (englische Fassung) zeigte ein Trend-Pullback-System (RSI(2) ≤ 20, Kurs ≥ 10 % über SMA200) gegenüber Zufallseinstieg +0,11R.

Was ich daraus mache

Methodik in Kürze
